In the Kuşadası district of Aydın, the claim that the CHP-led Kuşadası Municipality constructed an unauthorized building in an area allegedly belonging to the AK Party-led Aydın Metropolitan Municipality brought the two municipal teams face to face. Tensions escalated in the evening hours, prompting police intervention.
It was claimed that the Kuşadası Municipality has started a new construction project in the area that was previously used as a service building and parking lot by the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality. The Metropolitan Municipality teams stated that the area is their property and wanted to stop the work and demolish the structure.
TENSION ROSE, POLICE INTERVENED While the prepared iron rods were being cut, the Kuşadası Municipality teams also arrived at the site. Tension increased in the evening hours as the parties confronted each other. After the verbal disputes escalated into a scuffle, a large number of police teams were dispatched to the area. The police intervened by creating a barricade between the parties.
"NO COURT DECISION, ADMINISTRATIVE WRITING, OR CLEAR LEGAL BASIS WAS PRESENTED" The Kuşadası Municipality made a written statement regarding the events. The statement included the following expressions: "AK Party member Çerçioğlu attacked the right of the people of Kuşadası to service. This disgraceful practice has gone down in history as a dark stain. The Aydın Metropolitan Municipality entered the area that the Kuşadası Municipality had built for public service with the force of the municipal police in the evening hours, effectively occupying it. The bureaucrats and teams of the Kuşadası Municipality, who tried to resist this ugly attack, were subjected to insults and physical assault.
The teams of the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality's Zoning Directorate attacked the area under construction for the purpose of serving the citizens of Kuşadası with a large number of personnel in the evening hours. The right of the people of Kuşadası to service was violated. This intervention, carried out without any court decision, administrative writing, or clear legal basis, usurped the will of the Kuşadası Municipality and the people of Kuşadası. This practice, which constitutes a blatant attack on the right of the people of Kuşadası to receive services and has gone down in history as a dark stain, once again revealed how ruthless the AK Party's Aydın Metropolitan Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu can be in line with her personal interests, personal vendettas, and political goals. Those who resisted the occupation were subjected to physical assault.
"THE CONCEPT OF LAW WAS DISREGARDED" During the intervention, it was observed that the environment became tense, the bureaucrats of the Kuşadası Municipality were put under pressure, and verbal insults and behaviors that escalated to physical contact occurred. This de facto situation created by the use of public power showed that the concept of "law" was completely disregarded. The police protect the occupiers, not those who resist. The revelation that Aydın Governor Yakup Canbolat had no instructions regarding this application confirmed the arbitrary nature of the intervention. The teams of the Kuşadası District Police Department, instead of protecting those who tried to resist this disgraceful practice, are trying to facilitate the work of those exhibiting this ugly behavior. The attitude displayed by the security forces drew great backlash from the citizens.
