WOMAN DIES AFTER SCISSORS LEFT IN HER ABDOMEN
In a written statement from the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, it was reported that the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five who was operated on at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in the state, was confirmed to be due to medical negligence following a preliminary investigation.
In the investigation initiated regarding the incident, it was stated that a pair of scissors was left in the patient's abdomen during the surgical operation, and as a result, Umar lost her life.
In the statement, it was reported that three healthcare personnel directly responsible for the incident were immediately removed from their clinical duties, and the case was referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee.
SHE SUFFERED FOR MONTHS, THE TRUTH WAS ONLY LATER DISCOVERED
A relative of the deceased woman, Abubakar Mohammed, stated in an interview with a local newspaper that Umar had undergone surgery at the same hospital in September 2025 and experienced abdominal pain that lasted for months and gradually intensified after the operation.
SENT HOME WITH PAIN RELIEVERS MULTIPLE TIMES
Mohammed claimed that despite the patient applying to the hospital multiple times, she was only sent home with pain relievers and that comprehensive examinations were not conducted.
SHE COULD NOT HAVE A SECOND SURGERY
Mohammed noted that recent scans revealed that the scissors had been left in the patient's body during the surgery, and although a second surgery was planned, Umar passed away before this operation could be performed.
