In Kayseri, 15-month-old A.Y.Ç. accidentally swallowed a button battery and a Lego toy piece while playing at home. Her 4-year-old brother, who was nearby, called their mother, saying, "My sister swallowed a Lego." When the mother, Tuğba Yılmaz, looked into A.Y.Ç.'s mouth and couldn't see the piece, she thought it would come out in her stool. After a while, noticing that A.Y.Ç. was having difficulty swallowing, Tuğba Yılmaz went to Kayseri City Hospital.
REMOVED WITH A 3-HOUR OPERATION
An X-ray performed on A.Y.Ç. revealed a button battery and a Lego piece in her esophagus. Baby A.Y.Ç. was taken into surgery by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erman Dörterler, the Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology at Kayseri City Hospital, and his team. After approximately 3 hours of surgery, the button battery and the Lego toy piece that had entered A.Y.Ç.'s esophagus were removed.
"SITUATIONS THAT CAN RESULT IN DEATH AFTER 2 HOURS"
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erman Dörterler, the Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology at Kayseri City Hospital, stated, "Our patient is a 15-month-old baby. Our patient has swallowed a disk battery and a Lego piece. I arrived at the hospital around 1:30 AM. It had been about 6-7 hours since she swallowed the battery and the Lego piece. In these situations, every minute and time is very important. After 2 hours, we face situations that can cause serious problems, even leading to death. I was with about 20-25 people, including the chest surgery, pediatric gastroenterology, anesthesia team, and supporting healthcare personnel. We intervened quickly and carefully with the child. Because time was passing, the disk battery had adhered to the esophagus and was about to perforate. We tried to remove it carefully and meticulously. With teamwork, we succeeded in removing it. After a 2-day follow-up process in the intensive care unit, we transferred her to our ward. She is doing quite well now," he said.
"THEY SHOULD CHOOSE LARGE AND BULKY TOYS"
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dörterler, who warned families, said, "I want to tell families this: After 9 months, children tend to put any object they pick up into their mouths. Therefore, we encounter such cases more frequently in the 1-3 age range. Families need to choose large and bulky toys for their children. Batteries should be placed in areas that children cannot reach. They should not give nuts to children under 3 years old. Nuts can get lodged in the airway and cause sudden deaths. Don't say 'it won't happen to us.' Be especially sensitive to these issues. This child was lucky; but not every child may be so lucky. I try to warn families whenever I see them. This child survived. Hopefully, we won't encounter such cases. Families should be more careful about this," he said.
"SHE UNDERWENT A VERY DIFFICULT SURGERY"
Mother Tuğba Yılmaz said, "She went to the toy room and swallowed an object. My 4-year-old son said, 'Mom, my sister swallowed a Lego.' I know first aid. I intervened, but it didn't come out. I thought, 'She must have swallowed it, it will come out in her stool.' Later, when I saw her having difficulty swallowing, we came immediately. We learned that there was also a battery. It turned out she swallowed the battery first and then the Lego piece. We were shocked. We were very scared. What we feared the most was her swallowing something. Normally, we would be careful, but it was something that happened in the blink of an eye. From now on, we will be more careful. Everyone should be careful. She underwent a very difficult surgery. If it weren't for Dr. Erman and his team, my child might not be in my arms. We came here immediately because it is a fully equipped hospital. We didn't think of going to another hospital. Actually, we are far away in terms of location, but we came right away. We are very satisfied with everyone," she said.
