UEFA made a historic decision 33 years after Czechoslovakia won the European Championship in 1976, declaring Slovakia as a European champion as well. Since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992, only the Czech Republic had been officially recognized as the champion. With this decision by UEFA, for the first time in the tournament's history, a championship title has been shared between two countries.
