The International Football Association Board has made some significant changes to the rules of the game. The most notable of these rule changes, made by IFAB, concerns goalkeepers. With the new decision, the time goalkeepers are allowed to hold the ball in their hands has been increased to 8 seconds. If goalkeepers hold the ball for more than 8 seconds, a corner kick will be awarded to the opposing team instead of an indirect free kick.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced that a series of changes to the rules of football have been accepted. The board made a unanimous radical decision regarding the rule about the time goalkeepers can hold the ball and the penalty associated with it.
IF GOALKEEPERS HOLD THE BALL FOR MORE THAN 8 SECONDS, THE OPPONENT WILL TAKE A CORNER
With the new rule, if goalkeepers hold the ball for more than 8 seconds, a corner kick will be awarded to the opposing team. In the previous rule, the time for goalkeepers to hold the ball was 6 seconds, and the penalty was an indirect free kick.
Some changes made by IFAB to the rules of the game are as follows;
- If a goalkeeper holds the ball for more than 8 seconds (provided the referee counts down with their hand), the referee will award a corner kick to the opposing team.
- If an official of a team, a substitute player, a substituted player, or a player temporarily off the field touches the ball while leaving the field and there is no intention of unfair interference, an indirect free kick will be awarded without disciplinary sanction.
- In matches, the referee now has the option to make an announcement after a VAR review or a long VAR check.
- IFAB supported the commitment to test body cameras worn by match officials in FIFA matches. FIFA confirmed its intention to implement body cameras as part of live match coverage in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
WHEN WILL IT BE IMPLEMENTED?
The decisions made by IFAB will come into effect starting from the FIFA Club World Championship, which will begin on June 14, 2025.
