The location of the hearing in the case filed by the CHP's presidential candidate and detained Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu against the annulment of his university diploma has been clarified. The Istanbul Regional Administrative Court No. 5 sent a letter to the prison to hold the hearing on January 15, 2026, in one of the halls at the Marmara Closed Prison campus.

The trial for the lawsuit filed against the cancellation of the university diploma of the CHP's presidential candidate and detained Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been scheduled to take place on January 15, 2026, in the courtroom located within the Marmara Closed Penal Institution campus. The court sent a letter to the prison for the trial.

A LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST THE CANCELLATION OF THE DIPLOMA

Ekrem İmamoğlu, whose university diploma was canceled on March 18, 2025, and who was detained the following day as part of an operation, had appealed to the judiciary for the annulment of the decision taken on the grounds of irregularities in the horizontal transfer procedures during his graduation process in the English Business Department of the Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration.

A request for the annulment of the Istanbul University Board of Directors' decision dated March 18, 2025, regarding graduation and diploma cancellation on the grounds of "absence" and "clear error" had been made.

TRIAL DATE IS JANUARY 15

The Istanbul Regional Administrative Court No. 5, where the case will be heard, has set the trial date for January 15, 2026. The court wrote a letter to the Marmara Closed Penal Institution to ensure İmamoğlu's presence at the trial.

It was noted that İmamoğlu was taken outside Silivri only due to the "espionage" investigation following his detention in the "financial" investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and it was expected that he would also be released from prison for the diploma case. However, the court decided that the trial would be held within the Marmara Penal Institution campus in Silivri.

THE COURT LISTED ITS REASONS

The reasons for conducting the trial within the prison campus were detailed in the letter sent by the court to the prison. The letter emphasized that the courtrooms in the courthouse were insufficient in terms of capacity, the microphone system was not suitable for conducting a healthy trial, and there was no appropriate area for the detained plaintiff to wait.

For these reasons, it was decided that the trial scheduled for January 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM would be held in a suitable hall within the Marmara Closed Penal Institution, and necessary security measures were requested to be taken.
