The Ankara Governorship announced that the event organized by the CHP in front of the First Grand National Assembly building tomorrow, on the occasion of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day, has not been deemed appropriate. In a written statement from the governorship, it was noted that the event would negatively affect traffic flow and cause inconvenience to citizens.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel called for a gathering in front of the 1st Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) building in the capital Ankara for the celebration of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day during his party's group meeting.
GOVERNORSHIP REJECTS CHP'S APRIL 23 MARCH Following Özel's call, the CHP requested permission from the Ankara Governorship to make a speech in front of the 1st Grand National Assembly building and then to organize a march to Anıtkabir. However, the governorship announced that the CHP's request was not deemed appropriate and was rejected.
REASON: NEGATIVE IMPACT ON TRAFFIC FLOW In a statement regarding the matter, the governorship cited the 'symbolic importance of the area designated for the event, the negative impact on traffic flow due to the event, and the potential for citizens to be adversely affected' as the reasons for the rejection.
"REQUEST FOR A MEETING-QUALITY ACTIVITY NOT DEEMED APPROPRIATE" In a written statement made by the Ankara Governorship, the following expressions were included:
"Due to the historical and cultural mission of the 1st TBMM building and its surroundings, it is anticipated that our citizens, especially students, will visit with high participation on the occasion of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day. If the area is closed, it will prevent our citizens from visiting. Additionally, due to the heavy traffic load of the requested location, any meeting held here would negatively affect the traffic flow of the entire city and cause our citizens to suffer. Furthermore, since the area where the meeting and demonstration march is intended to be held is not one of the areas designated and announced under the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911, the request for a meeting-quality activity was not deemed appropriate. It has been communicated to the Provincial Presidency that if a request is made for one of the areas that have been properly designated and announced by our Governorship (e.g., Anadolu Square, Anıtpark, Seymenler City Square, Lale Square, Kalaba City Square, etc.), all kinds of assistance and facilitation will be provided by our Governorship."
