Historical inscriptions were found during landscaping works in the Midyat district of Mardin. An investigation has been initiated to determine the period and language of the findings.
Historical inscriptions bearing writings were uncovered during landscaping work by municipal teams in the Midyat district of Mardin. The period and language to which the inscriptions belong will be determined through scientific examinations.
DISCOVERED BY MUNICIPAL TEAMS
During landscaping work conducted by municipal teams in the rural Ortaca Neighborhood of Midyat district, those who noticed the writings on the stones reported the situation to authorities. Upon the notification, gendarmerie and Mardin Museum Directorate teams were dispatched to the area. While gendarmerie teams took security measures, museum officials secured the inscriptions considered to be historical.
PERIOD UNDER INVESTIGATION
In initial examinations, while the findings were assessed as having historical significance, it was stated that the language to which the writings on the inscriptions belong and the period they date back to will become clear as a result of scientific studies. While the possibility that the inscriptions may be linked to historical structures in the region is being considered, it was observed that the writings are located on multiple stone blocks.
EXPERT COMMITTEE TO EXAMINE
It was stated that a committee consisting of archaeologists, art historians, and relevant experts is expected to conduct a detailed examination to determine the content of the inscriptions, the period they belong to, and the writing language. It was learned that the findings will be evaluated by the Mardin Museum Directorate following scientific studies.
