In the Feke district of Adana, while the tar and red pine forests are covered with a white blanket, a landscape reminiscent of fairy tales has emerged. In the higher areas, the snow depth exceeds 1 meter in places, while teams are working hard to keep the closed roads open. Children on their mid-term break are enjoying the snow on sleds along village roads and slopes.
In Adana, known for its summer temperatures exceeding 50 degrees, icicles forming on the roofs of houses created images reminiscent of Siberia this time. After heavy snowfall affecting Mansurlu, Güzpınarı, and many neighborhoods connected to Feke, snow depth in areas at an altitude of 1,600 meters reached up to one meter. The scenery formed in the tar and red pine forests rivaled Uludağ, while snow joy was experienced in the higher parts of Adana.
DRYING WATER SPRINGS HAVE STARTED TO FLOW AGAIN
Neighborhood residents stated that some water springs that had dried up in recent years due to drought have started to flow again with the effective snowfall this year. The snowfall provided landscapes that integrated with nature and also brought hope for regions experiencing water shortages.
In high-altitude neighborhoods where the air temperature dropped to the old 30 degrees at night, the icicles forming on the roofs of houses and frozen snow masses drew attention along with the storm.
"THIS IS NOT THE EAST, THIS IS MANSURLU NEIGHBORHOOD"
Mansurlu Neighborhood Muhtar Selahattin Kırtaş drew attention to the severity of winter conditions,
"In our neighborhood, which is a plateau in summer, we are currently seeing minus 30 degrees. Today the temperature is minus 11 degrees. Everywhere is covered in ice, there are icicles on the roofs. Our municipality and the highway teams intervened before the roads were closed. This is not the east, this is Mansurlu Neighborhood. Our population exceeds 10,000 in summer, but in winter we are 50 households. We had a water shortage due to drought. We think that our water problem will decrease with this snow," he said.
"DIESEL EVEN FREEZES"
Arif Karafakıoğlu, an operator of the highway machinery working in snow removal, described the difficulties of the work with the following words:
"This place sees minus 30 degrees. Diesel even freezes. We start clearing the road at 6 in the morning and work until late hours."
24-HOUR SNOW WORK IN 33 NEIGHBORHOODS
Feke Municipality Personnel Director Erkan Özen stated that the work continues uninterrupted upon the instruction of Mayor Cömert Özen, saying, "We are working on a 24-hour basis in the high parts of our district. We have left no road unopened in 33 neighborhoods. We thank our teams and the highway personnel for their efforts," he said.
On one side, the struggle against harsh winter conditions, and on the other side, colorful images of children meeting the snow reflected both the harsh and joyful face of winter in Feke.
