The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office denied social media claims regarding the release of Berk Akand, who was convicted in the Şule Çet murder case, and announced that an investigation has been initiated on the matter. The prosecutor's office stated that the convict was transferred to an open prison but was sent back to a closed prison due to a post made during the leave period.
On May 29, 2018, Şule Çet, who fell from the 20th floor of a plaza in Ankara and lost her life, had her murder case where the defendant Çağatay Aksu was sentenced to 18 years and 9 months in prison for aiding Berk Akand, whose girlfriend shared a photo of them together on social media. Akand responded under the photo, saying, "I’m glad to be here in spite of all of you." It was learned that Akand, who is thought to have been released, was taken to an open prison in Aksaray, and the photo was stated to have been taken two months ago on the date he has permission every three months.
CLAIMS OF RELEASE ARE BASELESS
A user named A.U. on social media claimed on November 16, 2025, that Berk Akand, the convict in the Şule Çet case, had been released, stating, "Our execution system encourages criminals." The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that this claim is completely unfounded.
"A DISCIPLINARY INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED DUE TO HIS SHARING DURING PERMISSION"
In a statement made by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated, "As a result of the trial conducted by the Ankara 31st Heavy Penal Court regarding the incident that caused Şule Çet's death on May 29, 2018, the convict was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months for aiding intentional murder; 5 years for aiding sexual assault; and 1 year and 3 months for the crime of depriving a person of their liberty. As a result of the appellate and Supreme Court reviews, the conviction judgments have become final. The sentence of the convict named Berk Akand has been executed in a closed prison since the date of his arrest, while the mentioned convict was transferred to an open prison in accordance with the relevant legislation on June 5, 2025. During the period the convict was in the open prison, disciplinary actions were taken against him due to his sharing during his permission, and then his conditions in the open prison were terminated, and he was transferred to Aksaray Type T Closed Prison. In clearer terms, the release of the convict named Berk Akand has not occurred; on the contrary, his execution has continued uninterruptedly. It has been understood that the X social media sharing has become a subject of public communication tools, and in light of the above explanation, this sharing and thus the news content does not reflect the truth. Therefore, an investigation has been initiated by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against A.U. for the crime of 'Publicly Disseminating Misleading Information' under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code," it was stated.
