In the investigation regarding the death of a mother and her two children, who were taken to the hospital with suspected food poisoning in Fatih, Istanbul, the number of people detained has risen to 11. Among the latest detainees are 2 hotel staff members and 1 employee of a pest control company.

MOTHER RECOUNTED BEFORE PASSING AWAY

Before passing away, mother Çiğdem Böcek recounted one by one what they had eaten after arriving in Istanbul during a police interview while her treatment was ongoing.

In her statement, Çiğdem Böcek mentioned that they arrived in Istanbul for tourism on November 9 with her husband and children and started staying at the Harbour Suit Hotel. She stated that they had kebabs at a restaurant near the hotel in the evening, while the children had pasta.

On the morning of November 10, she reported that they had soup near the hotel with her husband, while the children had pastries. In the evening, they again had minced pide near the hotel, while the children had sausage and cheese pizza. Böcek stated that on the morning of November 11, her husband brought pastries and simit from outside, and they had breakfast at the hotel.

On the same day, around 16:00, she mentioned that the family ate mussels from a vendor with a dirty beard, gray hair, and a hat, aged between 45-50, next to Ortaköy Mosque. Later, they had soup at a restaurant named "G**** Kokoreç Midye" on Dereboyu Street, followed by the children eating sausage bread, her husband eating kokoreç, her son Kadir Muhammet taking only a bite of the kokoreç, and she herself eating chicken tantuni. They later bought lokum from a shop named H*** S*** Bazaar in Fatih and stated that they all ate lokum together.

"NO TREATMENT OTHER THAN PROBIOTICS WAS APPLIED TO THE CHILDREN"

Çiğdem Böcek stated that they woke up with nausea around 01:00 on November 12, but went to Bezmialem Hospital around 09:00 in the morning, where she and her husband were given IV fluids, and medications for stomach protection and pain relief were prescribed. She expressed that they went to Çapa Hospital for their children since they were not treated at Bezmialem Hospital, where probiotics were prescribed for the children, and no other treatment was applied.

She mentioned that they returned to the hotel the same day and did not eat anything due to stomach discomfort, and on November 13 around 01:00, they called an ambulance to the hotel because they felt unwell again and were taken to the hospital.

CAUSE OF DEATH NOT DETERMINED IN INITIAL EXAMINATION

In the report prepared by the Forensic Medicine Institution following the initial examination, it was stated that the cause of death for the 2 children and the mother could not be determined, and that the final report's examination results were awaited to determine the cause of death.

PEST CONTROL WAS PERFORMED AT THE HOTEL

As part of the investigation initiated regarding the incident, 4 people, including Ercan E., the owner of the restaurant where the family dined, and Yusuf D., a street mussel vendor, were detained. After 2 more tourists were taken to the hospital on November 15 with complaints of poisoning from the same hotel, attention turned to the hotel. It was revealed that pest control was performed at the hotel on November 11 at around 17:00. Officials from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, along with AFAD and crime scene investigation teams, took samples from pillows, sheets, water bottles, and blankets in the hotel for examination. Measurements made by AFAD did not reveal any negative findings. Following examinations conducted by the District Health Directorate teams on 15 guests staying at the hotel, no negative findings were reported. While samples were sent to the laboratory for examination, the hotel guests were directed to different hotels for their accommodation.

HOTEL OWNER HAS 2 CRIMINAL RECORDS

On the other hand, it was determined that H.O., the owner of the hotel detained as part of the investigation, has 2 criminal records for "intentional injury" and "unjust enrichment," while the son of the pest control company owner has 3 criminal records for "negligent injury," "fraud," and "releasing an animal in a way that poses a danger." It was found that D.C., a worker at the pest control company, has no criminal record.

H.S., who sells mussels in their raw form, S.Y., a waiter working at "G*** Kokoreç ve Midye," E.E., a chef at the same establishment, F.A., the person preparing the mussels, M.K., the owner of the mussel stall, and Ö.T., who works as a waiter at "S*** Kafe," were interviewed as "informants."

TRADERS DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS

The detained street mussel vendor, kokoreç seller, and lokum seller suspects stated that they have been trading in the area for a long time and that their products are fresh, thus denying the allegations.

In the investigation, it was determined that pest control was performed by a pest control company at the hotel on the evening of November 11 around 17:00, and measurements made by AFAD did not reveal any negative findings.

Additionally, it was learned that no negative findings were reported following examinations conducted by the District Health Directorate teams on 15 guests staying at the hotel, while laboratory tests regarding the results of the food samples taken are ongoing.

THE HOTEL THEY STAYED IN WAS CLOSED

The police team's examination at the hotel as part of the investigation has been completed. The team examined the belongings brought to the lobby and later took some of the collected items for laboratory examination. The guests staying at the hotel were directed to different hotels.
