Two people lost their lives in a mid-air collision between two planes at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona. This accident marks the 7th aviation incident in the U.S. in the last three weeks.

The accident occurred on Wednesday at the airport near Tucson, where a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II collided in the air. Photos taken by witnesses show black smoke rising from the crash site.

Emergency teams that arrived at the scene following a report of a downed aircraft at 08:30 local time determined from aerial footage that at least one of the planes had broken apart and crashed into a field, with smoke still rising.

According to local ABC channel KGUN, there were two people on each plane, and one of the aircraft is partially intact. A plane surrounded by police tape was seen at the airport, but it is not yet known whether it was involved in the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of the accident. The Marana Police Department has not yet made a statement as work at the scene is ongoing.

The airport does not have a control tower. The tower, which is planned to be built by the end of 2024, has been postponed to 2029 due to the pandemic. Pilots flying in uncontrolled airspace are required to inform other pilots of their positions and comply with FAA regulations.

This accident is the 7th plane crash that has occurred within three weeks following the mid-air collision incident in Washington DC that killed 67 people. Earlier this week, a Delta plane crashed on a snowy runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada. Passengers had to escape the overturned aircraft through doors and windows.
