40-year-old Murat Kavalcıoğlu, who met the ney at a course he attended in Eskişehir in 2012, started working to produce this instrument after a while. Transforming the lower floor of his apartment into a workshop, Kavalcıoğlu gained proficiency in ney making with various machines and tools he acquired.
STARTED SPENDING 15 HOURS A DAY IN THE WORKSHOP TO MEET INCREASING DEMANDS
Mastering the production of the headpiece (the part attached to the mouth of the ney instrument to obtain a strong and bright sound), Kavalcıoğlu began spending 15 hours a day in his workshop to meet the increasing demands due to the interest in his custom designs.
SENDING TO GERMANY, FRANCE, AND THE USA
Murat Kavalcıoğlu, who received the title of traditional handicrafts artist from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2019, sends the ney he produces from reeds obtained from Adana and headpieces made from various types of wood not only within the country but also to Austria, Germany, France, Spain, and the USA.
NEY PRICES RANGE FROM 1050 TL TO 7000 TL
Kavalcıoğlu offers his produced neys for sale from 1050 to 7000 lira, and headpieces from 2000 to 3500 lira, reaching buyers who contact him via the internet. Murat Kavalcıoğlu told AA reporter that as a result of the effort he has put in for many years, professional artists prefer him. Emphasizing that wood and buffalo horn are living materials, Kavalcıoğlu stated that he has developed a unique method that allows for the easy processing of wood and buffalo horns.
THE HARDER THE MATERIAL, THE MORE RESONANCE IT HAS
Kavalcıoğlu explained that he produces neys from reeds obtained from Adana, and continued: "The headpiece affects the sound quality of the ney by 30%. The most delicate part of the ney is the headpiece. If we can find hard materials among the materials we can use and process, the quality of the sound improves significantly. The harder the material, the more resonance it has. Headpieces made from buffalo horn are also used by professional artists because they are quite valuable materials. Its design completely depends on your mood at that moment. Buffalo horn is a heterogeneous material. It does not respond the same way to every intervention. There can be veins inside. These need to be well understood."
"WE NEED TO KNOW THE MATERIAL WE WILL WORK ON WELL"
Kavalcıoğlu stated that each type of wood has different hardness, and for this reason, he uses different knives in making headpieces from wood. He noted that learning the structure of the wood and horn without breaking them took him years, and added: "We need to know the material we will work on well. Thus, the more examples you work with, the better designs you can create. I started with completely custom-designed neys. I made headpieces that do not have examples in Turkey. I have made thousands of designs for headpieces. We create customizable works. I engrave personalized names with our laser machines. I try to come up with different products every year." Expressing that he loves his job, Kavalcıoğlu said, "It goes on as it started, I have never lost my passion. I have always worked with love. When I wake up in the morning, it doesn't feel like I'm going to work, I tell myself, 'I'm going down to make a ney.' I still experience the curiosity of which neys I will make that day."
