The Minister of Family and Social Services, Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, announced that children under the age of 15 will not be able to access social media and gaming platforms without identity verification. Göktaş announced that the regulation will be implemented by the end of the month.
It has been reported that the internet regulation aimed at children under 15, which has recently started to be implemented in some European countries, will also be put into effect in Turkey. Accordingly, children under 15 will not be able to access social media and gaming platforms without identity verification.
MINISTER GÖKTAŞ: WE WILL IMPLEMENT IT BY THE END OF THE MONTH
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş made striking statements to Sinan Burhan, the Editor-in-Chief of Millet News, who was a guest on the program "Let's Talk Now" with Hande Aydemir regarding the internet regulation for children under 15.
Burhan explained the details of the regulation on tv100 screens, saying, "This is really a very important issue. The Minister says, 'This is a topic that the whole world is talking about. However, let’s emphasize that this is not an internet ban. It is a ban on social media and games. We will implement this by the end of this month.'"
MEASURES AGAINST PEDOPHILIA AND LGBT TRAPS
Minister Göktaş continued his remarks: Access to websites containing pedophilia and LGBT content on the internet negatively affects children's morals. A 13-year-old child can talk and play games online with someone who is 55 years old; they do not know the age of the person they are interacting with.
"THIS WILL NO LONGER BE ALLOWED"
Children under 15 will not be able to enter social media and gaming platforms without identity verification. Social media platforms and gaming platforms will be monitored by the state. Children will no longer be allowed to be used as a commercial commodity. Children are getting away from their studies due to the internet, leading to depression and stress. Children are being used as a means of commercial profit on the internet.
THE STATE WILL MONITOR THOSE PLATFORMS
Roblox did not have a representative in Turkey, but opened a representation when the ban was brought up. Roblox had 9.5 million subscribers and was negatively affecting the mental development of children. For this reason, strict monitoring has been implemented for gaming and social media platforms.
"DRIVER'S LICENSE, VOTING AGE IS SUBJECT TO AGE, BUT NOT THE INTERNET"
One cannot vote before the age of 18, nor can one obtain a driver's license; nevertheless, children aged 12-13 can access social media and gaming platforms. Identities are hidden on these platforms, and children are directed towards harmful and corrupting trends. Social media and games hinder children's studying and lead to their exploitation. The state must take all necessary interventions to protect children.
