The speed limit for public transportation vehicles in Istanbul has been lowered. In order to reduce traffic accidents and increase passenger safety, the maximum speed has been set at 70 kilometers for İETT and Private Public Buses. The implementation came into effect today.
In a megacity with approximately 20 million residents and workers, public transportation is of vital importance. To prevent accidents caused by heavy traffic, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has moved speed control to a digital system. With the new regulation, the speed data of buses will be monitored in real-time.
REPORT FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT COMPLY
If the set limit is exceeded, a speed violation report will be prepared for the relevant personnel. Violations will be recorded through the system, and necessary evaluations will be conducted by the relevant units.
HOW MUCH IS THE TIME DIFFERENCE?
Authorities state that the impact of speed reduction on travel time is limited. For example, a distance of 10 kilometers is covered in about 6 minutes at a speed of 100 kilometers, while at a speed of 70 kilometers, this time increases to 8 minutes and 34 seconds. Experts point out that a speed difference of 30 kilometers significantly increases the risk of accidents.
