The teams of the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change determined that 40 trees that should be preserved and relocated according to the "tree survey plan" included in the project approved by the Bodrum Municipality were cut down during their inspections on the land belonging to artist Mehmet Suavi Saygan. It was revealed that a similar environmental destruction occurred in the park area located in the northwest of the land; it was observed that all the trees in the area were cut down, leaving only one olive tree. REACTION TO SUAVI WITH 'CHAV BELLA'As reactions continue regarding the trees cut down for villa construction in Bodrum, AK Party Istanbul Deputy Yücel Arzen interpreted the famous Italian folk song "Chav Bella" for Suavi to protest the situation. Arzen used the following statements in the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly to draw attention to the damage caused by Suavi to the environment: "Is it the cutting of 3 trees in Gezi Park, or is it the cutting of 80 trees for villas in Bodrum? The tragic story of artist Suavi reminded us of an Italian folk song." WHAT HAPPENED?The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change initiated an investigation regarding the trees cut down on the land of famous artist Mehmet Suavi Saygan in Bodrum and conducted a situation assessment. The investigation revealed that 40 trees that should be present in the garden according to the project approved by the Bodrum Municipality were cut down. It was also determined that 29 trees specified in the "tree survey plan" were not relocated, and 11 trees that should have been preserved were not protected, and the trees in the park area located in the northwest of the parcel were also cut down, with no trees left in the area except for one olive tree. Additionally, it was recorded that the walls planned as 50-centimeter stones were built with bricks, and plaster or stone cladding was applied on top of the brick walls. The Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change sent an official warning letter to the Bodrum Municipality for the evaluation of the land within the framework of zoning law. Authorities stated that necessary actions would be taken regarding those responsible for the violations of the project. In a statement on social media regarding the incidents, Suavi said, "This is the 100% illegal 3-story building that triggered this false campaign and the first demolition application by the Municipality with a court decision. You popped up everywhere like mushrooms with the zoning amnesty, and then is it to set a trap for those doing legal work? False journalism is a disgusting and low-level practice. If you have press ethics, personality, and dignity, ask the parties involved, namely me, the contractor, before making accusations. If you are not convinced, then take the necessary actions. But from our side, there is evidence and answers for all of them." Suavi also wrote, "Lastly; I bought that land in 2000, it is not new. It has been 24/25 years of ownership. There was no registered, endemic tree or zoning. Zoning was done around 2016-17, and we had no knowledge of it. Our construction decision is for 2 years. We lived there for 15 years, summer and winter. My daughter was born there. The trees are ours. The heart reminded us. These houses are houses built in common with a 50% share. There is a contractor. We are only the landowners. In other words; there is no exceptional situation. Although our life there is not continuous, it will continue in the end. I said, my daughter's birthplace is there, and the bond with the land will not be broken."
