A crude oil leak has been detected from an oil well off the coast of the U.S. state of Louisiana into the sea. Oil slicks are forming on the sea surface, while it is not yet clear how long the leak has been ongoing and how much oil has mixed into the sea. Authorities are assessing the possibility of the oil reaching the coast.

An oil leak has occurred at an oil well located in Eloi Bay off the coast of the US state of Louisiana. In the incident detected on October 13, it was determined that crude oil from the well was mixing into the sea. While oil slicks forming on the sea surface have caused concern, the effects of the leak on the environment have begun to be investigated.

IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE OIL LEAKED FROM THE WELL'S VALVE

In inspections carried out at the oil well located in the Gulf of Mexico and reported to belong to the company Cox Operating, it was determined that crude oil was leaking into the sea from the valve section. After it was determined that the leak was continuous, teams took action. However, it has not yet been possible to calculate how much oil has mixed into the sea. For this reason, the extent of the pollution caused by the leak is also not precisely known.

THE OIL MAY REACH THE COAST

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has begun investigating which areas the oil spreading across the sea surface could be carried to under the influence of winds and currents. In initial assessments, it was stated that the oil could reach the coastline. In such a case, there is concern that natural habitats along the coast could be adversely affected.

OIL HAD ALSO BEEN DETECTED IN THE REGION BEFORE

In satellite surveys previously conducted in Eloi Bay, traces indicating that there could be oil on the sea surface had also been found. In another inspection in the region, it was confirmed that oil was continuously coming out from an underwater point. However, whether there is a direct connection between the previous leaks and the latest incident has not yet been determined.

IT IS UNCLEAR WHETHER THE LEAK HAS BEEN STOPPED

While official records state that oil is continuously leaking from the well, no definitive statement has been made regarding whether the leak has been completely brought under control. The authorities' investigations continue into both the source of the leak and the environmental effects that the oil spreading into the sea may cause.
