The unanimous approval by Libya’s House of Representatives of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Delimitation of Maritime Jurisdiction Areas signed between Türkiye and Libya in 2019 was welcomed with satisfaction in Ankara. Evaluating the decision, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director of Communications Burhanettin Duran emphasized that this historic step is of great importance for the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean and for strategic cooperation between the two countries.
The Libyan House of Representatives’ approval by unanimous vote of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Delimitation of Maritime Jurisdiction Areas signed between Türkiye and Libya in 2019 was welcomed by Türkiye. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Communications Director Burhanettin Duran stated that the decision was important for relations between the two countries and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
MESSAGE OF SATISFACTION FROM THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
In a written statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was reported that the decision adopted by the Libyan House of Representatives on October 20 was welcomed.
In the statement, which noted that the Memorandum of Understanding observes the mutual rights and interests of the two countries on the basis of international law and equity principles, it was expressed that the agreement would contribute to further deepening cooperation between Türkiye and Libya.
The statement also recorded that Türkiye will maintain its will to work with all partners in line with its attitude of respect for international law to ensure security, stability and peace in the Mediterranean basin.
BURHANETTİN DURAN: AN IMPORTANT AND SATISFYING STEP
Communications Director Burhanettin Duran also stated in a statement on his social media account that the Libyan House of Representatives’ unanimous approval of the memorandum of understanding was an important development for Türkiye-Libya relations and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Duran stated that the decision was important in terms of protecting the common rights and interests of the two countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, determining maritime jurisdiction areas on the basis of equity, and strengthening regional cooperation.
Noting that Türkiye, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, will continue to protect its legitimate rights and interests in the Blue Homeland, Duran recorded that the determination to develop relations with friendly and brotherly Libya and to support fair sharing, peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean will continue.
