22 MONKS DETAINED FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING
Officials stated that following the search, each monk's suitcase contained 5 kilograms of marijuana, and the drugs were hidden in secret compartments within the suitcases. They reported that 22 monks, most of whom were students, were detained after the incident.
Officials indicated that another monk, believed to have organized the monks' trip to Thailand, was later detained near Colombo.
Officials noted that the monks, brought before the court on suspicion of drug trafficking, were ordered to be held for an additional 7 days for further questioning. They also stated that they are considering the possibility that the suspects may not have been aware of the contents of the packages they were carrying in their suitcases.
