It was announced that the death penalty will be sought for Tyler Robinson, who killed right-wing activist Charlie Kirk in the U.S. Utah County District Attorney Jeff Gray stated that Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, describing Kirk's death as a "tragedy for the United States."
Prosecutors in the state of Utah, USA, announced that they will seek the death penalty for Tyler Robinson, who killed right-wing activist Charlie Kirk in a planned assassination.
Utah County District Attorney Jeff Gray held a press conference regarding the judicial process related to the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
THEY WILL SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY
Gray stated that Tyler Robinson, who killed Kirk in the planned assassination, is charged with aggravated murder and that they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
Gray mentioned that Robinson faces a total of seven separate charges, including aggravated murder, "obstruction of justice" for destroying evidence, and "witness tampering" for telling his roommate to delete messages.
"HE WILL CONTINUE TO BE HELD IN CUSTODY"
Gray described Kirk's death as an "American tragedy" and expressed that they do not take the request for the death penalty lightly and did not arrive at this decision easily. Gray stated, "I do not take this decision lightly. This is a decision I made independently, looking solely at the existing evidence, circumstances, and the nature of the crime as the district attorney. Because we are seeking the death penalty, the defendant will continue to be held in custody without the right to bail in the Utah County Jail."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Charlie Kirk, co-founder and president of the conservative student movement Turning Point USA, was also among the leading supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Kirk, known for his conservative Christian views, was shot and killed while speaking at an outdoor event attended by three thousand people on Wednesday, September 10, at Utah Valley University. The 22-year-old Tyler Robinson shot Kirk in the neck with a single bullet from a sniper rifle from a rooftop.
Robinson, a third-year vocational student in electrical engineering at a state technical college, managed to flee the scene after the assassination but was arrested at his family home, approximately 420 kilometers away from the scene, on the night of September 11. Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that the state tends to seek the death penalty but that prosecutors would consider Kirk's family's wishes before making this decision.
Authorities conducting the investigation announced that they continue to examine evidence, including electronic devices that the suspect may have accessed, and that federal charges may also come in the coming days. While officials have not yet disclosed any motivation related to the assassination, U.S. Vice President James David Vance stated that "left-wing extremism" played a role in Kirk's murder.
"RADICALIZED OVER THE INTERNET"
U.S. President Donald Trump stated during a press conference at the White House yesterday that Robinson was radicalized through the internet. Trump said, "Something happened to him in a relatively short time. Apparently, he was radicalized over the internet." Trump referred to Robinson as "a leftist."
