WhatsApp has begun testing a new security feature called "Scam Alert" against fraudulent messages from unknown numbers. On-device artificial intelligence will analyze suspicious messages and warn the user about potential scam attempts. The feature, initially offered to Android beta users, is expected to be rolled out to a wider audience after testing.
The platform is working on a new security feature against fraud attempts carried out via WhatsApp. The system, which targets suspicious messages sent especially using the names of banks, official institutions, or well-known brands, aims to make it easier for users to detect fraud attempts.
WILL WARN WHEN A SUSPICIOUS MESSAGE ARRIVES
The new feature, called "Scam Alert," has begun to be rolled out gradually to beta users. The system, which can be manually activated from the Account menu in the Settings section, will analyze messages coming from unrecognized numbers.
If the message is determined to be a potential fraud attempt, WhatsApp will show a warning to the user.
BLOCK AND REPORT OPTION WILL BE OFFERED
After the warning, the user will be able to block the suspicious number and report it to WhatsApp. If the person sending the message is considered trustworthy, the number can be added to trusted contacts.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WILL WORK ON THE DEVICE
One of the notable points of the new feature is that artificial intelligence will be used in fraud detection.
It was stated that the artificial intelligence model used within the scope of Scam Alert will work on the device and will inform the user about potential risks by analyzing suspicious messaging behaviors. It was expressed that the system is designed to be developed over time against new fraud methods.
LAST 5 MESSAGES CAN BE SENT
It was stated that in conversations with a number added as a trusted contact, users will be able to forward the last 5 messages from the chat history to the other party.
Additionally, the person sending the message will not be able to see whether the other party uses the Scam Alert feature.
COMING FIRST TO BETA USERS
To try the new security feature, Android beta users will need to have WhatsApp version 2.26.34.1.
The feature is currently in the testing phase. After the beta process is completed, Scam Alert is expected to be made available to a wider user base.
