According to the North Korean official news agency KCNA, the Korean People's Army announced that it will cut all land and railway connections with South Korea starting from October 9, 2024. This decision was stated to be taken in response to the recent military activities of South Korea and the United States. In the statement, South Korea was described as the "primary enemy state" and "fixed main enemy." The North Korean army defined this step as a "self-defense measure aimed at preventing war and ensuring the country's security." North Korean officials claimed that the military situation on the Korean Peninsula has become "acute" due to South Korea's exercises and the visit of some U.S. nuclear assets to the region. It was emphasized that stricter measures have been taken in response to these developments. Additionally, it was noted that the North Korean army informed the U.S. troops in the South about this fortification activity via text message, aiming to prevent possible misunderstandings and conflicts that could arise from accidents. The American military presence in South Korea has continued since the Korean War of 1950-53, with 28,000 American soldiers currently stationed in the country. The division between North and South Korea remains an unresolved conflict dating back to the Cold War era.
