Famous automotive designer Luc Donckerwolke stated that the excessive increase of SUV and crossover models in the market could lead to consumer fatigue over time. He expressed that this segment is approaching its peak and that interest may shift back to sedans, hatchbacks, and sports cars.
Luc Donckerwolke, who has signed the design of many iconic models from Skoda Octavia to Lamborghini Murciélago, and currently serves as the Genesis Design Director and Vice President of Design at Hyundai Motor Group, made striking evaluations regarding the SUV segment. Donckerwolke stated that the rapid growth in the SUV market could reach saturation in the long term and that this segment might lose its appeal over time.
THEY ARE CREATING UNIFORMITY IN THE MARKET
Donckerwolke pointed out that the increase in SUV and crossover models in almost every class in recent years has created a noticeable uniformity in the automotive market, emphasizing that these vehicles, which stand out with their elevated structures and claims of versatility, have become dominant in both design and sales strategies. However, he stressed that this intensity could have a negative impact on consumer perception in the future.
"SUVS HAVE REACHED A CERTAIN PEAK"
According to evaluations published in Motor1, Donckerwolke predicted that SUVs have now reached a certain peak and that demand may slow down after this stage. The designer stated that this situation is a natural cycle in the automotive world, recalling that similar trends have risen and then declined in the past.
SEDAN CARS MAY COME TO THE FOREFRONT AGAIN
According to Donckerwolke, the potential saturation in the SUV segment could pave the way for other body types such as sedans, hatchbacks, and sports cars to come to the forefront again. The designer noted that after the rapid spread of SUVs, the likelihood of consumers turning to different and alternative vehicle types is increasingly growing.
