The President of the Egg Producers Central Union (YUM-BİR), İbrahim Afyon, stated that egg prices have started to decline, saying, "Large eggs are leaving the producer at 3.5 lira and can easily be found in markets for 5.5-6 lira." This month's topic of the "Sectors Speak in the Exchange Square" organized by the Istanbul Commodity Exchange was "Eggs," which has been on the agenda due to recent price increases and export restrictions. Union President İbrahim Afyon noted in the online meeting that egg prices have increased, especially during the last days of Ramadan, and reported that those sold under the name of "alternative production methods," which are not classified as farm eggs, are being sold at exorbitant prices.
"WE HAVE STUDIES FOR SALES BY KILOGRAM"
Afyon drew attention to the fact that some opportunists are selling eggs under different names at prices much higher than those of farm-produced eggs, stating, "Exorbitant prices emerge here, and consumers are deceived. If a person is buying free-range and organic chicken eggs, they should definitely question the certification of the product." Emphasizing that the sale of eggs by kilogram is sometimes discussed in the sector, Afyon said, "Sales by kilogram exist in European countries. We have studies related to this with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In sales by kilogram, small and large eggs would go into the same packaging, which could create a problem. Currently, selling by kilogram does not seem very feasible in Turkey. Perhaps prices could be created based on size."
BIG DIFFERENCE IN SALES PRICE
Afyon stated that there was a disruption in egg prices before Ramadan, saying, "While it was sold for 150 lira in one market, we saw it for 270-280 lira in another market. Such a difference should not exist. Giving the right price for the right product is achieved with conscious consumers. Prices had actually started to decline during Ramadan, but with the activity at the end, they rose again. The Ramadan activity has ended, and with the new hens entering production and exports dropping to zero, egg prices have started to decline. Currently, our prices are being offered at around 90-100 lira per kilogram. Large eggs are leaving the producer at 3.5 lira and can easily be found in markets for 5.5-6 lira."
As we have entered the summer season, Afyon expressed that the decrease in prices will continue due to reduced consumer demand and increased production, stating, "Currently, the eggs weighing 52 grams and below are in trouble because they are not exported and do not attract much interest from our people. We consider it reasonable for the price of a tray of 30 eggs to be around 150-160 lira after the period known as the May pit."
