After the NATO Summit, President Erdoğan stated that the issue of S-400 did not come up during his meeting with U.S. President Trump. Erdoğan said, "Donald Trump is well-intentioned regarding Turkey's acquisition of F-35s. We discussed this matter with him. There are positive steps regarding Eurofighter. Talks with the UK and Germany are ongoing."
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a press conference following the NATO Summit held in The Hague, Netherlands. Answering questions from journalists, President Erdoğan explained the details of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN: TRUMP IS WELL-INTENTIONED ON F-35
President Erdoğan stated that the S-400 issue was not discussed during the meeting with Trump, but the F-35s were on the agenda. President Erdoğan said: "We did not discuss the S-400 with Mr. Trump in our meeting. It was not on our agenda. That issue is a done deal. We discussed the F-35 issue. In this regard, we made a payment of about 1.3 to 1.4 billion dollars. I saw that Mr. Trump is well-intentioned regarding the acquisition of the F-35s. Our responsible colleagues are continuing our work related to the maintenance and repair of our F-16s and the acquisition of F-35s.
"THERE ARE POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS REGARDING EUROFIGHTER"
We also have our work related to Eurofighter. We are continuing our efforts with the United Kingdom and Germany. Our hope is that our goodwill is positively received by the United Kingdom and Germany as well. Our work is ongoing.
First and foremost, as of now, the steps we will take in the next 10 years will of course come from the national budget. By gradually allocating the necessary share from the national budget here, we will have provided our support to NATO. We have held and are holding discussions regarding the Eurofighter. We are in talks with Germany and the United Kingdom. There are positive developments in this regard. After we achieve this, hopefully, we will have taken our steps."
