Russia's Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev declared NATO as "Moscow's enemy" in a clear statement to the country's leading agency, TASS. Medvedev raised tensions once again with his words, "The enemy should be treated like an enemy."
Medvedev, in a post he made in English on his X account, stated, "NATO is our enemy. Which 'council' are we talking about?" expressing his pleasure at the complete dissolution of the Russia-NATO Council. He also recalled the words of Soviet writer Maxim Gorky, saying, "If the enemy does not surrender, he will perish."
IN LINE WITH PUTIN'S WARNING
Medvedev's remarks came shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin's harsh statements towards Europe. Putin had said that any attack attempt from Europe would be "met with a very strong response" and warned the West by stating, "If Europe wants war, we are ready."
RESPONSE FROM RUTTE
In response to these developments, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed that Russia was acting "recklessly" and emphasized that the alliance would use all its means to protect Europe.
Putin's message of "we are ready" and Medvedev's statement that "NATO is the enemy" are seen as the latest indicators of Moscow's shift away from diplomatic rhetoric towards an open threat language against the West.
