U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar made a strong statement following President Donald Trump's remarks directed at her and the Somali community in Minnesota. Responding to Trump's comments during a cabinet meeting where he referred to Omar and other Somali immigrants as "garbage," Ilhan Omar stated that Trump has "always been racist, bigoted, xenophobic, and Islamophobic."
US President Donald Trump's remarks towards Somali-American individuals have raised tensions in Washington once again. Trump's targeting of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and the Somali community in Minnesota during a cabinet meeting, referring to them as "garbage," provoked a strong reaction from Omar.
ATTACKED OMAR IN CABINET MEETING
During the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, Trump described Omar and the Somali diaspora as "garbage" and stated that they should leave the United States. Reiterating his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Trump said, "If we continue to let garbage into our country, we will go down the wrong path. Ilhan Omar is garbage. Her friends are garbage too."
RESPONDED VIA SOCIAL MEDIA
Ilhan Omar responded to Trump's remarks through social media. "His obsession with me is disturbing," said Omar, adding, "I hope he gets the help he needs." Omar described Trump as "always racist, bigoted, xenophobic, and Islamophobic."
ESCAPED CIVIL WAR, BECAME A SENATOR
Omar, who fled the civil war in Somalia and sought asylum in the United States at a young age, is known as the first Somali-American woman to serve in the American Congress. Representing a district in Minnesota with a large Somali diaspora, Omar has long been among the targets of Trump.
Trump has previously claimed that he "does not know" Omar, asserting that she has been "complaining about the U.S. for years," and labeled her as "a very incompetent and terrible person."
