Hüseyin Çelik, one of the founders of the AK Party and former Minister of National Education, reacted to the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. Çelik stated, "The AK Party came to power by going through similar paths. What was done to Mr. Erdoğan and the AK Party back then was wrong, and what is being done to Mr. İmamoğlu and the CHP today is also wrong. The will of the people should not be subjected to arm wrestling."
As part of the corruption and terrorism investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, 87 people, including İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu, were detained.
"THESE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE THINGS"
A reaction highlighting İmamoğlu's detention also came from Hüseyin Çelik, one of the founders of the AK Party and former Minister of National Education. In a statement made on his X account, Çelik used the following expressions; "The cancellation of Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma and the detention of him and many of his colleagues this morning are not acceptable things."
"IT HAS CAUSED IRREPARABLE WOUNDS"
Moreover, the deprivation of the public's right to protest regarding the events has opened irreparable wounds related to our already fragile democracy and the principle of the rule of law.
Taking extraordinary measures and decisions without declaring a state of emergency is effectively a practice of martial law. It is self-evident that all kinds of reactions and protests should remain within the bounds of reason and law.
"THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE A WRESTLING MATCH"
It should not be forgotten that the AK Party came to power by going through similar paths. What was done to Mr. Erdoğan and the AK Party back then was also wrong, and what is being done to Mr. İmamoğlu and the CHP today is also wrong. The will of the people should not be a wrestling match.
Before anyone else, the government should uphold the law of its political rival so that it can be respected in the eyes of the public and the whole world. It is clear that all these events have caused great harm to our already fragile economy. The ones who suffer are the low-income citizens who are already struggling to make ends meet. It is a shame, it is a sin…!!!
