Warning about the negative effects of the heat wave, Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen cautioned patients with high blood pressure and heart conditions. It is especially important to avoid staying under the sun between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Brain, Nerve and Spinal Cord Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen, highlighting the negative effects of the heatwave, which is increasing its impact day by day, on human health, warned against the risk of brain hemorrhage, stating that especially patients with high blood pressure and heart disease should be more careful in extreme heat.
The heatwave affecting the entire world also negatively impacts human health. Especially those who stay under the sun between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM are at greater risk. Extreme heat does not directly cause brain hemorrhage, but it poses a serious risk especially for patients with high blood pressure, heart and kidney diseases.
"Heat alone does not cause brain hemorrhage"
Brain, Nerve and Spinal Cord Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen made statements on the subject.
Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen stated that heat alone does not cause brain hemorrhage, saying, "Those who suffer brain hemorrhage in hot weather are generally people with high blood pressure, heart disease, those using diuretic medications, and those who do not consume enough fluids. Due to dehydration, blood density increases. This condition can cause blockage in brain vessels, stroke, and brain hemorrhage due to sudden blood pressure spikes."
"Do not stay under the sun between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM"
Emphasizing that one should not go out especially during the hours when the sun's rays are most effective, Şen said, "Unless necessary, one should not be under the sun between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Those who have to work outdoors should use hats, umbrellas, and protective clothing. Most importantly, plenty of water should be consumed. When fluid loss increases with excessive sweating, blood thickens, and this can create serious strain on the brain and heart."
"Do not stay under the sun for long periods"
Stating that patients with high blood pressure, those using blood thinners, those with advanced kidney disease, and individuals previously diagnosed with brain aneurysm need to be much more careful, Prof. Dr. Şen noted that these individuals should not stay under the sun for long and regular use of their medications is vital.
"Early intervention is important"
Also touching on the early signs of brain hemorrhage and stroke, Şen said, "If there are symptoms such as speech impairment, facial drooping, weakness in an arm or leg, imbalance, staggering while walking, tendency to sleep, and delayed response to stimuli, one should go to the nearest emergency room without wasting time. Early intervention is of great importance in preventing permanent damage."
Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen added that simple precautions to be taken in hot weather can prevent serious health problems, and emphasized that citizens, especially those with chronic diseases, should heed heat warnings.
