The Honorary President of the Contemporary Lawyers Association, Selçuk Kozağaçlı, has been released. After being held in Silivri's Marmara Prison for 8 years, Kozağaçlı stated, "The evil done to us will come to an end, the oppression will cease. We will create a dignified life together."
The Honorary President of the Contemporary Lawyers Association, Lawyer Selçuk Kozağaçlı, has been released from prison.
Kozağaçlı, who has been detained since 2017, was released from Marmara Prison in Silivri in the evening hours. He made a brief statement on his social media account. In his statement, Kozağaçlı said, "Hello, I am glad to be here! The struggle continues without pause, whether in prison or outside. The evil done to us will come to an end, the oppression will cease. We will create a dignified life together. We are right! We will win!"
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
The 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation completed the review of the appeal in April 2024 and upheld the sentences. The chamber noted that the decisions regarding the defendants Avni Güçlü Sevimli, Alper Tunga Saral, Gülvin Aydın Savran, Efkan Bolaç, Güray Dağ, Mümin Özgür Gider, Metin Narin, Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı, Oya Aslan, Rahim Yılmaz, Selda (Kaya) Yılmaz, Özgür Yılmaz, Serhan Arıkanoğlu, Taylan Tanay, and Sevgi (Özer) Sönmez were subject to the appeal process, while the decisions regarding Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Barkın Timtik were noted to be subject to appeal for all crimes except for the charge of "membership in a terrorist organization," and the file was returned to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of the Court of Cassation without examination. The 12-year prison sentence given to Selçuk Kozağaçlı for the charge of "membership in a terrorist organization" was reduced to 10 years and 5 months by the 3rd Criminal Chamber.
