The countdown has begun for the inflation data for May, which will be announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK). The inflation data for May will be revealed on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 10:00 AM.
IT WILL BE DECISIVE ON MANY ISSUES On the other hand, looking at the inflation figures, which are decisive in many areas, especially the pensions and salaries announced by TÜİK, it was calculated that the inflation rate was 5.03% in January, 2.27% in February, 2.46% in March, and 3.00% in April, with a total inflation rate of 13.36% over the four months. Thus, the increase rate for pensions and civil servants over the four months has also become clear.
"MAY INFLATION IS ESTIMATED TO BE 2.36%" Social Security Institution Chief Expert İsa Karakaş evaluated the inflation figures announced by TÜİK and made statements regarding the increases that SSK, Bağ-Kur, pensioners, and civil servants will receive.
Social Security Institution Chief Expert İsa Karakaş Karakaş emphasized that the 4-month inflation rates guarantee a 13.37% increase for SSK and Bağ-Kur pensioners, stating, "The situation for civil servants and civil servant pensioners is different because there is a collective bargaining factor. The increase rate for civil servants and civil servant pensioners was 9.02% over three months in March, but this rate has risen to 12.29%. When we look at the Central Bank's expectation surveys, May inflation is estimated to be 2.36%. Therefore, May will play a very important role in shaping the increases for all workers and civil servants," he said.
"WE EXPECT A MINIMUM OF 16% AND A MAXIMUM OF 17% UPDATE" Regarding the expected 6-month inflation rates, Karakaş stated, "Considering all these data, we can say that even if the government does not provide a welfare share or a flat increase for SSK and Bağ-Kur pensioners by July, there will be at least a 17% to 18% update. Civil servants and civil servant pensioners will again fall below inflation, and therefore, if there is no welfare share or flat increase in July, we expect a minimum of 16% and a maximum of 17% update," he explained.
HE ANNOUNCED HOW MUCH THE LOWEST PENSION WILL BE Discussing the lowest pension amounts by considering the expected 6-month inflation rates, Karakaş stated, "When we look at the lowest pension, it is 14 thousand 469 lira. Now, all pensioners have started to worry. In previous periods, the government made increases based on the base salary, so the minimum salary remained fixed. Will the government make increases based on the base salary in July? Or will it increase based on the current minimum? It will depend on this. If an update is made to the 14 thousand 469 lira base salary at the inflation rate like in January, we can say it will exceed 17 thousand lira. According to my calculations, it will be 17 thousand 73 lira. However, if the government increases based on the base salary, we can say that those with a base salary of 12 thousand 500 lira and below will face a zero increase." This means that when we look at the pension paid by SGK, our real base salary, that is, the salary granted by SGK without treasury assistance, is 12 thousand 500 lira, and if it is below that, there may be a situation of facing a zero increase. The lowest civil servant pension is currently 19 thousand 616 lira. Therefore, if TÜİK's inflation does not come in low, we can say that in the best-case scenario, with a 17% increase, the civil servant pension will rise to at least 22 thousand 950 lira.
