A university student, Aynur Ç., who left her baby at a cemetery after giving birth in Arnavutköy, and S.A., who is alleged to be the baby's father, have been taken into custody. Aynur Ç. claimed in her statement that when she left her baby at the cemetery, the baby was already dead. She said, "My baby couldn't latch on no matter what. The situation worsened. When it stopped moving, I thought it was dead and left it at the cemetery. Then I continued with my life."

While checking the cemetery, a security guard working at the Asri Cemetery in the Anadolu neighborhood of Arnavutköy, Istanbul, found a baby corpse on top of a grave. During the investigation conducted by the crime scene investigation teams that arrived at the cemetery upon notification, it was determined that the body belonged to a male baby and had scratches on some parts of its body.
KIDNAPPED THE BABY FROM THE HOSPITAL
In the examination conducted by the police teams from the Homicide Bureau at the scene, it was determined that the baby was 2-3 days old and still had its umbilical cord attached. During the ongoing investigations, the police searched nearby hospitals and found that Aynur Ç., who gave birth at Arnavutköy State Hospital, had taken her baby with her under the pretext of breastfeeding and escaped from the hospital by evading the staff. The teams reviewing the hospital's security camera footage determined that the woman took her baby and wandered around for a while before exiting the hospital grounds.
ARRESTED
After identifying her, Aynur Ç., who lives in the same area, was caught by the police. In her statement at the police station, Aynur Ç. confessed to leaving her baby at the cemetery and stated that the baby's father was a person named S.A. with whom she had been together for a while. Following this development, S.A., who was claimed to be the baby's father, was also apprehended by the police.
"I THOUGHT ABOUT ABORTING FIRST"
In her statement at the police station, Aynur Ç. said, "I was living in Istanbul with my family. I lost my father in 2018. After my father died, my whole family returned to our hometown. I was also going to go back. However, when I passed the university entrance exam for Turkish teaching, I stayed in Istanbul. I enrolled in a private university and started studying. My family was sending me money to support me." She continued her statement by saying that she had a relationship with S.A., whom she met a while ago, but later they had a falling out. "I broke up with him after a fight. After a while, I realized I was pregnant. At first, I thought about aborting the child. But then I thought I could give birth to him and take care of him. I also thought about somehow getting my family to accept it. After having a normal pregnancy, I admitted myself to Arnavutköy State Hospital to give birth to my baby," she said.
"HE WAS DEAD WHEN I LEFT HIM; I RETURNED AND CONTINUED MY LIFE"
Explaining that she was legally required to stay in the hospital for 24 hours after giving birth, the suspect Aynur Ç. said, "But I couldn't stay in the hospital. After taking my baby under the pretext of breastfeeding, I pretended to walk around the hospital and went outside with the baby, then came home. The baby was initially breastfeeding; however, later he stopped. After a while, he stopped moving and stopped crying. I thought he was dead. I went to the cemetery where my father's grave is located and left my baby there. He was dead when I left him. Then I returned and continued my life," she said.
FATHER: I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE BABY
On the other hand, S.A., who was taken into custody, claimed that he had no knowledge of the baby and that he had not seen Aynur Ç. again after they broke up, despite having lived together as a couple for a while. The suspects, whose procedures were completed at the Public Order Branch, were referred to the courthouse.
