Syrian President Bashar rejected the offer from the United States to normalize relations with Israel and become part of the Abraham Accords in exchange for lifting sanctions. The Syrian government stated that it cannot accept the proposal to normalize relations with Israel by joining the Abraham Accords, as Israel is still an occupying force in the Golan.
The US has offered to lift sanctions on Syria if it normalizes relations with Israel. However, the Damascus administration did not approve this offer.
SHARA SENT A LETTER TO TRUMP
In a report by Syria TV, it was emphasized that in the response letter sent by Syrian President Ahmed Shara to Donald Trump, it was stated that they "cannot accept the proposal to normalize relations with Israel by joining the Abraham Accords." The Syrian administration stated that "these accords were made with countries that do not occupy Israeli territories" and that "Syria cannot be a part of these accords due to ongoing occupations."
The Syrian administration underlined in the letter its determination to "continue building a Syria that will not pose a threat to any party." According to the report, the Syrian administration also stated that the US's demands regarding foreign fighters "require comprehensive consultation meetings with Washington."
According to sources, the Syrian government stated in its response that "a distinction must be made between foreign fighters and fighters that pose a threat to US security."
"SYRIA WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BE USED TO THREATEN REGIONAL COUNTRIES"
A few days ago, Ahmed Shara stated in an interview with the New York Times that they "will not allow Syria to be used to threaten regional countries" and that "no foreign entity will be allowed to pose a threat to other countries from Syrian territory."
US REPRESENTATIVE DISPROVEN
US House of Representatives members Cory Mills and Marilyn Stutzman had various meetings in Damascus in recent weeks. Mills, who also met with President Shara, claimed in an interview with Bloomberg that during his 90-minute meeting with Shara, the Abraham Accords were discussed and that Shara was willing to join the agreement "if the right conditions are met." This response from Damascus disproved Mills' claims.
ABRAHAM ACCORDS
The Abraham Accords were signed in 2020 through the US as part of the normalization between Israel and some Arab countries. The process, initially signed with the UAE and Bahrain, was later joined by Morocco and Sudan. The accords cover the establishment of diplomatic relations and economic cooperation. The Arab countries that are parties to the Abraham Accords commit to officially recognizing Israel, establishing diplomatic and economic relations, and increasing regional cooperation.
SHAYBANI: GOLAN IS UNDER OCCUPATION
Syrian Foreign Minister Esad Hasan Shaybani stated that Israel's airstrikes directly target the sovereignty of his country. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Shaybani said, "The excuse of armed groups supported by external forces used to justify such attacks has now lost its validity." Reminding of Israel's presence in the Golan Heights, Shaybani said, "We have repeatedly brought this to the attention of this council: The Golan has been under occupation for 50 years following illegal annexation. This is clearly against the UN Charter." Shaybani emphasized that Israel targets civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, the new Syrian flag was raised alongside the flags of member countries at the UN headquarters in New York.
