An interesting incident in Wales highlights how a Bitcoin fortune can turn into trash. A man named James Howells lost his hard drive, which contained approximately 717 million dollars worth of Bitcoin. Interestingly, the person who threw the hard drive away was his ex-girlfriend, Halfina Eddy-Evans. Halfina explained the events by recounting the story for the first time: "James asked me to throw it away. There were a few items in black bags. I dropped it off at the waste center while returning from the school bus. I had no idea there was something so valuable inside. Now I hope he finds it and stops talking about it! I don't want a single penny of his money, just let him be quiet." James earned 8,000 Bitcoins by mining in 2009. He says that at that time, Bitcoin was not as valuable as it is today, and he forgot the passwords he had stored on the hard drive. Now, these Bitcoins are worth approximately 23 billion TL. James wants to dig up the Newport Council's landfill to find his hard drive. He even says that if he finds it, he will donate 10% of the money to the city and make Newport "the Dubai of England." However, the council is not allowing this, citing environmental concerns. The beginning of the story actually stems from a simple home accident. Lemonade was spilled on James's laptop, and the computer broke down. While selling the parts, he kept the hard drive, but later it ended up in the trash along with other old belongings. James has recently taken the council to court with a compensation claim of 495 million pounds. The first hearing will take place this month, and the decision will be made on December 3rd. The council states, "Our environmental permits are not suitable for this, and excavation work will cause significant harm to the environment."
