It was revealed through security camera footage that individuals with disabilities were subjected to violence at a private care center in Karaman. Teacher Müşerref Cengiz, who reported the violence her brother experienced to the governor's office, stated, "If there are slapping incidents even in the corridor, no one knows what happened in areas without cameras."

In Karaman, teacher Müşerref Cengiz, a mother of two, placed her 88% disabled brother Enes C. in a special boarding care center in November 2024 after the death of their father. However, after a while, Cengiz became suspicious when her brother said during video calls, "They are hitting me," and his fearful expressions led her to apply to the governor's office.

VIOLENCE CAPTURED ON CAMERA

In the security camera footage examined following the complaint, moments were detected where caregivers hit, dragged, and abused individuals with special needs. The footage showed that disabled individuals, including Enes C., were trying to escape from the caregivers.

"NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED IN AREAS WITHOUT CAMERAS"

According to a report by Ali Rıza Akbulut from Hürriyet; Müşerref Cengiz described the events as follows: "Enes was constantly talking about being beaten. When we heard from our cousin that some patients were tied up to be fed, and washed with a hose while still in their clothes, our suspicion increased. The camera footage revealed the violence of three caregivers. My biggest concern is the areas without cameras. If there are images of slapping in the corridor, no one knows what happened in the rooms and bathrooms. The director said, 'I cannot monitor the cameras 24 hours,' and did not take responsibility."

CARETAKERS' DEFENSE OF "I WAS JOKING"

In the investigation initiated by the prosecutor's office, the caregivers whose statements were taken admitted to the violent footage but defended their actions as "for joking purposes" or "for precautionary reasons."

  • Employee M.D. stated, "I slapped Enes as a joke, I didn't mean to harm him."
  • Employee H.B. said, "I slapped S.G., but I don't remember why."
  • Employee A.G. defended, "I intervened to prevent him from escaping."

THEY WERE RELEASED, THE CENTER CONTINUES TO OPERATE

While the suspect caregivers were released after their statements, it was learned that the care home continued its activities. The scandal has once again brought to light the risks that individuals with disabilities face in care centers.
