OPERATION AGAINST 6 SUSPECTS
Teams of the Homicide Bureau of the Public Order Branch Directorate of the Mersin Provincial Police Department carried out extensive work to solve the murder committed in 2007. Reopening the file in line with the instructions of the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the teams investigated all aspects of the incident and identified the suspects. As a result of the work, while it was assessed that the murder was committed for an honor motive, a decision was made to conduct an operation to capture 6 suspects named H.Ş., H.Y., A.İ., B.Ş., Ö.Ş. and A.E., who were determined to be connected to the incident.
In order to capture the suspects and seize criminal elements, simultaneous operations were carried out at 6 designated addresses in Mersin, Batman, İzmir, Aydın, Yozgat and Sivas at around 07:00 this morning. As a result of the operation, in which 18 teams and 56 personnel took part, 6 suspects were captured and detained. During a search at the residence of suspect B.Ş., 32 narcotic pills were seized. It was learned that proceedings will also be initiated against the said suspect for a narcotics offense. It was reported that the suspects captured outside the province would be brought to Mersin and that the investigation into the incident is being meticulously continued by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
THE MOVEMENT OF RATS LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE BODY
The incident, which came to light in Mersin on August 1, 2007, at around 18:00, caused a great stir in the city at the time. A male corpse had been found in a refrigerator hidden inside a concrete structure surrounded by bricks in the courtyard of a house located on 4537th Street, Bahçe Neighborhood, Akdeniz district. It was reported that the tenant, who noticed rats moving around in the concrete structure in the garden of the house, began breaking the concrete with a sledgehammer out of suspicion and notified the police when a bad smell came from the broken section. After the examination by police teams arriving at the scene, Civil Defense teams broke the concrete and reached the refrigerator, and a mummified male corpse was found inside the refrigerator.
Because the top of the refrigerator had been covered with watery cement, the corpse had taken on a mummified appearance, and as a result of examinations and an autopsy, it was determined that the corpse belonged to Bahaddin Sefer. It was established that Sefer, born in 1958, lost his life as a result of a major blood vessel being cut due to a cutting-tool injury and a skull fracture. At the time the incident came to light, it was assessed that the corpse could be approximately 5 years old, and the connection with the disappearance of Bahattin Sefer, from whom no news had been received since 2002, was focused on. The incident, known publicly as the 'mummy corpse murder,' remained among unsolved files despite the years that passed. As a result of the work carried out by the Homicide Bureau teams, with the capture of 6 suspects after 19 years, an important stage was reached in solving the murder that had aroused public curiosity for a long time.
