As warm spring temperatures are experienced across Turkey in mid-February due to the southerly winds from Libya, heavy rainfall and cooler weather will be effective again starting from the beginning of the week.
The cold of the poles and heavy rainfall have caused Turkey to surrender to a spring-like atmosphere due to the warm winds coming from Libya. In mid-February, temperatures that resemble those of April and May will give way to cooler and rainy weather with the new week.
According to the forecasts of the General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM), the false spring effect continues today as well. Especially in the western regions, temperatures are significantly above seasonal norms. While thermometers in Istanbul and Ankara show 20 degrees, they rise to 25 degrees in the areas around Sakarya, Kocaeli, and Bursa. In the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, the air temperature hovers around 22-23 degrees.
THE WARM WIND WILL TURN INTO A STORM
The warm wind coming from Libya will create a short-term strong storm in the Aegean, Marmara, and Western Mediterranean, as well as the inner parts of the Black Sea and the northwest of Central Anatolia. Wind speeds are expected to reach 70 kilometers per hour. Experts warn that caution is needed against risks such as roof blow-offs and tree falls.
HEAVY RAIN IS COMING ON TUESDAY
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) stated that the false spring weather will give way to heavy rainfall starting Tuesday (February 17). In a statement from AKOM, the following was noted:
"Almost the entire country, especially Istanbul, is under the influence of a low-pressure system coming from the Central Mediterranean. Therefore, it is expected that the wind will strengthen from the southern directions and blow in places as a storm (30-60 km/h) while intermittent heavy rain transitions are predicted to occur throughout the next week."
YELLOW CODE WARNING FOR 9 PROVINCES
MGM issued a yellow code warning for Aydın, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Edirne, İzmir, Kırklareli, Manisa, Muğla, and Tekirdağ. Authorities have requested precautions against disruptions in transportation, roof blow-offs, tree falls, and poisoning from stoves and natural gas in these provinces.
SAND DUST WILL BE CARRIED
On the other hand, the warm wind is expected to carry sand dust to the western and southeastern regions. Experts emphasize that citizens with respiratory issues should be particularly cautious.
HOW WILL THE WEATHER BE IN THE NEW WEEK?
The false spring, which is effective throughout Turkey, will give way to cooler and rainy weather with the new week. Especially in the Marmara Region and Istanbul, temperatures will begin to gradually decrease starting Monday.
Rainfall, which will start tomorrow in the western provinces, will spread across the country on Tuesday. On Tuesday, strong downpours will be effective in the Aegean and Mediterranean. On Wednesday, temperatures will drop further; snowfall is expected in the inner and eastern regions.
