Five-year-old Halit Hamo, who left his home on Yuva Street in Mustafakemalpaşa early in the morning to go to the grocery store, was attacked by street dogs in an empty lot near his home.
PASSERSBY RESCUED HIM
Little Halit, who was rescued by two people passing by in a vehicle, was taken to Yalova Training and Research Hospital by the ambulance that arrived at the scene. Halit, who was severely injured by bites on his neck, was then transferred to Bursa. The moment of the incident was partially captured by a vehicle camera.
"A GROUP OF 4-5 DOGS"
Uğur Akbulut, who encountered the horrific scene while going to work with his brother in the morning, said, "As soon as we turned from the street, there were 2-3 dogs. One of the dogs had something in its mouth. At first, I couldn't understand what it was; I thought it was trash. Then we noticed when the dog was shaking it like a flag from its throat. We intervened. Normally, it is a hard place to see that child, but I say it was God's will that we saw it. We hope he will recover. The dog is not from the neighborhood. There were 4-5 dogs. It was a gang of dogs. This is not something that normally happens here. I think they came down from somewhere above," he said.
"THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH HIS TRACHEA"
Describing what he experienced during the incident, Akbulut said: "As soon as I got out of the car, my first reflex was to shout to call an ambulance, but there was no one. First, my brother and I chased the dogs. Then we called 112. The child was trying to get up. His trachea and throat were severely damaged. He had 5-6 wounds. There was a problem with his trachea. He was having difficulty breathing. He was trying to cry but couldn't. He was trying to get up while we were trying to help him. I called 112 again to ask what I should do, but I don't know if they told me or if I listened. My own psychology is not good either, understandably. Then the ambulance came, and they took him with his family. I hope the child will be okay. I am also an animal lover. In fact, I feed the cats here. I don't believe that showing leniency to a gang of dogs is animal welfare. Who bears the responsibility for this child? This is a difficult situation. This was an avoidable incident."
Little Halit's uncle, Rahmi Hamo, said, "We were sleeping in the morning. The child went to the grocery store. A dog caught him and bit him on the way. The child's condition is bad."
