Tesla's long-developed driverless taxi model Cybercab has begun service in Austin. Currently, about 45 Cybercabs are on the road, with plans to expand the fleet in the coming months.
Tesla's driverless taxi model Cybercab has begun carrying passengers in Austin, Texas, USA. Around 45 vehicles are currently in service, and Tesla plans to expand the fleet in the coming months.
The most striking feature of the Cybercab is that it has no steering wheel or pedals. The vehicle perceives its surroundings with 9 cameras and an in-cabin radar system, while the autonomous driving computer AI4.5 runs with 64 GB of RAM. The braking system uses brake-by-wire technology.
WILL COST UNDER $30,000
The Cybercab, designed for fleet use, features a 48 kWh NMC battery. The battery, composed of 528 4680 cells, powers a front-wheel drive motor producing 163 kW. The motor is stated to contain no rare elements and is 18% smaller and 25% lighter than previous solutions.
Tesla aims to keep the vehicle's production cost below $30,000. While single-piece aluminum casting and the "Unboxed Process" method are used in production, around 80% of manufacturing is planned to be autonomous. The Super Manifold V3 in the thermal management system provides 38% higher efficiency.
