The 10-year validity period of the chip-enabled Republic of Turkey identity cards, distribution of which began in 2017, will start to expire as of January 2, 2027. While expired cards are considered invalid, cardholders must apply to civil registry offices to renew their identity cards. For 2026, the identity card replacement fee is 220 lira, while the fee for a card issued due to loss is 440 lira.
The first renewal period for chip identity cards, which replaced old-style national identity cards, is approaching. Citizens who received their cards in 2017 will apply for renewal according to the expiration date written on the back of their cards.
THE FIRST CARDS EXPIRE IN 2027
The nationwide distribution of chip identity cards began on January 2, 2017. According to the regulation of the General Directorate of Civil Registration and Nationality (NVİ), the validity period of the identity card is 10 years. Cards are renewed as of the date following the end of their validity period. Therefore, the first cards issued in 2017 will expire successively starting in 2027, according to the date the card was issued.
“CARDS WHOSE VALIDITY PERIOD HAS EXPIRED ARE INVALID”
It is stated that cards are not automatically renewed when their validity period expires, and citizens must apply themselves. In a previous post by the Provincial Directorate of Civil Registration and Nationality, a warning was issued: “Republic of Turkey Identity Cards whose 10-year validity period has expired are invalid. To avoid inconvenience, renew your national identity card and identity card.”
HOW TO APPLY?
Renewal applications can be made to civil registration offices by making an appointment via randevu.nvi.gov.tr or the ALO 199 call center, or without an appointment. Applicants who have reached the age of 15 must come to the office in person. Fingerprint, finger vein pattern, and palm vein pattern are taken from both hands of applicants in this age group. Biometric data is not taken from those who have not reached the age of 15.
BIOMETRIC PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN WITHIN THE LAST 6 MONTHS REQUIRED
At the application, the current identity card or a photo-bearing official document such as a passport or driver's license is required. Applicants must bring 1 biometric photograph taken within the last 6 months and compliant with international standards (ICAO). Photocopied or computer-reproduced photographs are not accepted.
HOW MUCH IS THE RENEWAL FEE?
According to the communiqué of the General Directorate of Accounting of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance published in the Official Gazette dated December 24, 2025, as of January 1, 2026, the identity card replacement fee is applied as 220 lira. Citizens who lose their card pay 440 lira, which is twice this amount.
