While negotiations between Iran and the US have sparked debate in the country, a group of protesters in the capital Tehran demonstrated against the agreement process. At the protest held in Ibn Sina Square, slogans were chanted against Iranian Parliament Speaker and Head of the Negotiating Team Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while conservative lawmaker Mahmoud Nabavian questioned whether the agreement text serves national interests.
Iran's Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei, in a statement on his official Telegram account, called on the Iranian people and politicians for unity. Khamenei stated, "National unity is one of the most important elements of victory against the great Satan," highlighting the importance of social solidarity in the process the country is facing.
Emphasizing that all segments, especially politicians, must avoid steps that undermine social unity, Khamenei said political conflicts could harm the country.
MEMORANDUM DRAFT DEBATES GROW
The memorandum of understanding planned to be signed between Iran and the USA has caused intense debates in the country in recent days. Mahmoud Nabavian, a conservative member of the Iranian parliament, claimed that the draft agreement includes articles regarding the free and unrestricted opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the dilution of uranium.
Nabavian stated that, in return, there is no clarity on the lifting of sanctions against Iran, the release of frozen assets, and the country's access to a $300 billion fund.
"ARE NATIONAL INTERESTS PROTECTED?"
Commenting on the memorandum text, Nabavian said that whether the agreement serves Iran's interests should be questioned, asking, "Does this text serve national interests?"
Criticism of the agreement by conservative circles has further fueled debates over the government's diplomatic process with the USA.
STREET PROTEST IN TEHRAN
Opposition to the agreement was not limited to political circles. A group of Iranians gathered at Ibn Sina Square in the capital Tehran to protest the negotiations with the USA.
Protesters chanted slogans against Iranian Parliament Speaker and Head of the Negotiation Team Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
