The ancient vessel, which revives the maritime culture described in Homer's epics through experimental archaeology, meets visitors at the Troy Museum.
The work, reflecting the spirit and culture of the period, meets visitors in an exhibition organized in collaboration with the 360 Degree Historical Research Association and the Troy Museum, with contributions from Enerjisa Production. The boat, which showcases ancient shipbuilding techniques and was brought back to life through the method of experimental archaeology, highlights the maritime culture, ship architecture, and common values of Mediterranean civilizations of the era featured in Homer's epics.
HORSE FIGURE DRAWS ATTENTION
The boat, conveying the carpentry mastery and shipbuilding culture of the period, was produced using the ancient mortise and tenon method without any metal fastening elements. The structure, which attracts attention with its horse figure at the bow, is not only a means of transportation but also a representative of the symbolic maritime world of that era.
MOVED TO THE TROY MUSEUM
The boat, completed in the 360 Degree Historical Research Association campus in Urla, İzmir, under the consultancy of the Foça Excavation Directorate and based on archaeological data, was transferred to the permanent exhibition area at the Troy Museum in December of last year through a special operation.
EXHIBITION AIMS TO HIGHLIGHT MARITIME CULTURE
Although Troy often brings to mind the Trojan War and mythological stories, the region has been a critical maritime center throughout history due to its strategic location between the Aegean Sea and the Dardanelles. The exhibition aims to highlight not only the literary aspect of Homer's epics but also the rich maritime culture that nourished these texts.
"YOUR FORGOTTEN SHIP IS IN TROY"
In a promotional campaign evaluating the growing interest in ancient tales following Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey," adapted from Homer's epic Odyssey, a call was made to the famous director. The phrase "Your forgotten ship is in Troy" draws attention to the period boat at the Troy Museum.
