Teams from the Ministry of Commerce inspected the business that sparked backlash after footage showed it selling sandwich döner for 3,000 Turkish Lira in the Grand Bazaar. The investigation revealed that 100 grams of döner was sold for 600 TL, and reports were filed for four products due to unfair price increases. Additionally, an administrative fine was imposed on the business for violating labeling regulations, and the case was referred to the Unfair Price Increase Evaluation Board.
The business, which made headlines with images of selling a sandwich döner for 3,000 TL in the historic Grand Bazaar in Istanbul's Fatih district, was caught on the radar of the Ministry of Trade. Following the images that went viral on social media, teams took action and conducted an inspection at the establishment.
MINISTRY OF TRADE ISSUES A FINE
In joint inspections by the Istanbul Provincial Trade Directorate and Fatih Municipality police teams, it was determined that 100 grams of döner was sold for 600 TL at the establishment.
A report was prepared for 4 products under unfair price increases, and the file was sent to the Unfair Price Increase Evaluation Board for review.
Additionally, during the inspections, violations of the Price Tag Regulation were identified in 12 products. It was determined that the labels of the products did not include cl/ml information, and an administrative fine was imposed on the business.
STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY
In a statement on his social media account, Bekir Kaplan, Press and Public Relations Advisor of the Ministry of Trade, said: "Following the posts on social media about the sale of döner for 3,000 TL at a business operating in the Grand Bazaar, our Ministry of Trade teams have taken action. In the inspections carried out by our Istanbul Provincial Trade Directorate and Fatih Municipality police teams;
- It was determined that 100 grams of döner was offered for sale at 600 TL at the establishment, and a report was prepared for 4 products under unfair price increases.
- The prepared report and all information-documents have been sent to the Unfair Price Increase Evaluation Board for evaluation.
- Additionally, during the examinations, it was determined that in 12 products, contrary to the Price Tag Regulation, cl/ml information of the products was not included, and an administrative fine was imposed on the business.
As the Ministry of Trade, we will continue our inspections decisively to protect the rights of our consumers, combat unfair price practices, and ensure a fair trade order."
INSPECTIONS WILL CONTINUE
The Ministry emphasized that inspections against exorbitant price practices that victimize consumers, especially in touristic areas, will continue with determination.
In the statement, it was expressed that inspections will be carried out uninterruptedly to protect consumer rights, combat unfair price practices, and ensure a fair trade order.
