The specially engraved pistols gifted to world leaders by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the 36th NATO Summit he hosted in Ankara continue to be a topic of discussion. In a statement on the matter, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the weapon was taken by Canadian police and rendered inoperable, adding, "I can assure Canadians, they keep the guns away from me."
The echoes of the historic 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Ankara continue. The personalized engraved revolvers presented by President Erdoğan to the leaders after the summit are still being discussed.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, responding to press questions after his meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, shared interesting details about the fate of the gifted firearm.
"THEY KEEP FIREARMS AWAY FROM ME"
Canadian Prime Minister Carney stated that he had never personally seen the gifted firearm, confirming that the weapon is under the supervision of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) due to security procedures. Assessing the situation with a humorous tone, Carney said, "I assure Canadians, they keep firearms away from me."
Carney noted that he first learned about the gift when UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer mentioned it, expressing that he encountered an unexpected situation when he learned that Canadian officials had taken possession of the firearm.
THE FIREARM WAS NEUTRALIZED AND WILL BE PLACED IN A MUSEUM
Providing information about the status of the gifted weapon, Carney announced that the RCMP had deactivated the firearm within the framework of security protocols, meaning the weapon no longer has the capability to fire live ammunition.
Speaking about the fate of the firearm, the Prime Minister stated:
"The next thing that crossed my mind was that this would be for a place like the War Museum or the Canadian Armed Forces Museum. It's an interesting gift and relates to NATO, to the bigger picture. We will find the most suitable place for it."
"MY GIFT PALE IN COMPARISON TO ERDOĞAN'S GIFT"
Prime Minister Carney also jokingly remarked that Canada's famous maple syrup gift seemed "inadequate" compared to the firearm.
Global Affairs Canada also emphasized in a statement on the matter that all official gifts received from abroad are processed in strict compliance with Canadian laws, security requirements, and government policies.
FEATURES OF THE FIREARM GIFTED TO LEADERS
It was reported that the revolver gifted to the leaders is the Gümüşay 357 Magnum model produced by the Machinery and Chemical Industry (MKE) in the 1990s. Presented in a wooden box, the revolver features the logos of Turkey and NATO, as well as the phrase "First revolver-type pistol produced in our country" in both Turkish and English.
