In Esenyurt, Istanbul, 51-year-old Fariz Aydın suffered burns on approximately 30% of his body when the hot water bottle he placed on his leg exploded. Aydın said, "Suddenly, I felt my feet burning. I had placed it inside my pajamas. My hands burned until I took the bag out from inside the pajamas. My abdominal area and my leg burned." Prof. Dr. Mustafa Turan noted that cases of burns from hot water bottles are increasing and issued warnings.
Hot water bottles, which are found in most people's homes and are used on cold winter days or when we have pain in a certain part of our body, pose a significant risk. Fariz Aydın, a 51-year-old resident of Esenyurt, Istanbul, allegedly placed a hot water bottle on his aching leg on December 24, which contained platinum inside his pajamas.
HOT WATER BOTTLE EXPLODED
After a while, the hot water bottle exploded, causing burns on Aydın's body. It was determined that Aydın had burns on his hand, abdomen, and leg when he was taken to the Burn Treatment Center of Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital. Aydın, who had burns on approximately 30% of his body, was discharged after treatment. The Head of the Burn Center, General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Mustafa Turan, also warned about the dangers of hot water bottles.
"I HEARD NO SOUND, I JUST FELT MY BODY BURNING"
Fariz Aydın, who is still under observation, stated, "It happened around 1:00 AM. I had previously been in a traffic accident, and I have platinum in my leg. I was uncomfortable because of that, and I felt relief when I placed it on my leg. After about five minutes, it exploded. Suddenly, I felt my feet burning. I had placed it inside my pajamas. I had put boiling water in it, and I hadn't removed the air from the bag. I heard no sound; I just felt my body burning, and my hands burned until I took the bag out from inside my pajamas. My abdomen and leg burned. It was painful, indescribable; I put ice on it until I got here, but it didn't help. I will never use it without knowing how to use it and what temperature water to put in. People should buy a quality product and not use it without getting information from where they bought it," he said.
"INCIDENTS WITH HOT WATER BOTTLES HAVE STARTED TO INCREASE"
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Turan stated that in cases of burns, individuals should first cool the area under running tap water for 15-20 minutes and then cover the burned area with a wet, clean material before seeking medical attention.
Prof. Dr. Turan said, "Due to the use of stoves in winter, products used to ignite the stove, such as thinner and barbecue gel, can sometimes cause burns. Such burns can occur. Additionally, in recent years, incidents involving hot water bottles have started to increase. Caution is necessary; when hot water is added, especially when it exceeds 50 degrees, these products can deform suddenly. The patient may have put 1 or 1.5 liters of very hot water in the bag, leading to burns over large areas of the body. We may have patients we follow up from the outpatient clinic; boiling water should never be used with these products. The air inside must be removed, and the cap must fit properly. It is important to ensure that the products are of good quality," he said.
"ONE SHOULD NOT SLEEP WITH A HOT WATER BOTTLE"
Prof. Dr. Turan pointed out that people sometimes sleep with hot water bottles, but this should not be done. "Sometimes they sleep with that hot water bottle, and they say they wake up from sleep; the patient can lie on it, so we need to be careful. Our patient has 30% burns. We recommend that the public be cautious when using such products. The patient used this product due to pain at night. He put hot water in it and came to us with 30% burns and an abnormal level of pain. Sleeping with these products is also dangerous because it can increase pressure by lying on it. When it is very hot, steam accumulates inside, creating pressure, which can lead to an explosion. We should pay close attention to how well the caps fit, and we should not use old products," he stated.
