The death toll from the flood disaster caused by a torrent on Nepal's border with China has risen to 270, while the number of missing has increased to 826. In Gyirong, in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, 3 people lost their lives, and it was reported that 558 people, including 260 foreign nationals, remain unaccounted for. The US Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the disaster was not an earthquake but resulted from a 'glacial collapse and debris flow.'
The death toll from the flood disaster on the Nepal-China border is worsening. In a statement from Nepalese police, it was reported that the number of fatalities from the flooding following the Bhotekoshi River overflow has risen to 270. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) stated that 826 people, including 539 tourists, are missing. The Nepalese army has deployed 2,000 military personnel for search and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas. Additionally, 3,318 police officers are supporting the efforts.
"GLACIER COLLAPSE, NOT AN EARTHQUAKE, CAUSED THE DISASTER" In a statement from the U.S. Geological Survey, it was noted that the flood was caused not by an earthquake but by a "glacier collapse and debris flow," which led to "catastrophic impacts in the downstream basin." The statement said, "Additional analyses of nearby seismic stations, long-period seismic waves, and satellite imagery have allowed us to determine that the event was actually a glacier collapse and debris flow, and no earthquake occurred."
3 DEAD, 558 MISSING IN CHINA In Gyirong, in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, 3 people lost their lives due to a landslide, and 558 people, including 260 foreign nationals, are missing. It was stated that the flood and landslide on the Nepalese side struck Gyirong Port.
Gyirong Port is known as Tibet's main foreign trade port, and the vast majority of China's trade with Nepal is conducted through here.
GLOBAL AID TO NEPAL Countries and organizations from around the world have begun sending cash, relief supplies, and other aid to Nepal following the flood disaster. China's embassy in Nepal stated that emergency relief supplies and cash aid have been sent to Nepal.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in a statement on social media platform X, said the European Union is ready to "provide further assistance." India's Ministry of External Affairs announced that India has sent 10 tons of disaster relief materials, including temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, lamps, and medicines. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies reported that it has allocated $1.24 million in emergency funds to support the Nepal Red Cross Society's response to the flood. The U.S. State Department also announced it has sent a disaster response advisor to Nepal and provided $500,000 in funding. The World Health Organization Nepal Office reported the provision of essential emergency medical supplies, including medicines and multi-purpose tents.
