CASUALTIES IN KENYA PROTESTS RISE TO 31
In a statement from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), it was noted that the number of people who lost their lives in protests across the country has risen to 31, while the number of injured has reached 107. The statement expressed that KNCHR strongly condemns all human rights violations and called for accountability from all responsible parties, including police, civilians, and other stakeholders.
CALL FOR PRESIDENT'S RESIGNATION
In Kenya, thousands of people expressed their grievances regarding economic issues and police violence during protests held to mark the 35th anniversary of the pro-democracy "Saba Saba" demonstrations on July 7, 1990. Protesters are also demanding the resignation of President William Ruto and accountability from the police, as well as economic reforms.
KNCHR announced yesterday that at least 10 people were killed and 29 were injured during the nationwide protests.
Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Office, stated today in Geneva that security forces used "live ammunition, rubber bullets, tear gas, and water cannons" during the protests that took place in the capital Nairobi and other regions of Kenya.
Shamdasani remarked, "The occurrence of these recent events just two weeks after it was reported that 15 protesters were killed and many more were injured in Nairobi and other regions of Kenya on June 25, along with the casualties and looting and property destruction during the protests, is very concerning."
