The fire, which started around 10:00 PM local time on Saturday at the Gul Plaza Shopping Mall in Karachi, Pakistan, is still undergoing cooling efforts after being brought under control yesterday. The number of fatalities in the fire, which was extinguished after approximately 33 hours of challenging work by firefighting teams, is increasing along with the search efforts.
MORE THAN 70 PEOPLE MISSING
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the South Region Police Asad Raza announced that the death toll in the fire has risen to 14. Rescue teams stated that the identities of 5 bodies recovered from the scene could not be determined. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori reported that more than 70 people are still missing, expressing that the incident has turned into "a national tragedy."
THE FIRE STARTED IN A FLORIST
The fire that broke out on Saturday evening in Pakistan started in a florist and had not been extinguished for more than 18 hours. A part of the shopping mall, which has approximately 1,200 stores, collapsed due to the fire, and all shops and warehouses on the ground floor were engulfed in flames.
