Following the PKK's decision to lay down arms, a heated debate took place in the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly between Gülistan Koçyiğit from the DEM Party and Turhan Çömez from the İYİ Party. Koçyiğit criticized the İYİ Party, claiming that advocating for peace has been criminalized, while Çömez stated that they would continue to stand against those who take orders from terrorists.
While the echoes of the PKK terrorist organization's decision to lay down arms and dissolve continue, a heated debate took place between DEM Party's Gülistan Koçyiğit and İYİ Party's Turhan Çömez in the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM).
DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Gülistan Koçyiğit stated, "The only place that considers defending peace a crime is here, and the only group is themselves. We will defend peace to the end, even if it costs us our lives."
"WE WILL CONTINUE TO STAND AGAINST THOSE WHO RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS FROM TERRORISTS"
İYİ Party Balıkesir Deputy Turhan Çömez responded harshly to Koçyiğit's statements. Çömez said, "We will continue to stand against terrorism. We will stand against those who meet with terrorists and receive instructions from them. We will also object to the imperial extensions behind the terrorists and terrorist organizations, those who give them instructions. While we want everyone in this country to be equal and first-class citizens, living in peace, you are feeding from Qandil. You couldn't utter a single word to condemn terrorism even once," he said, attacking the DEM Party from the podium.
As the tension between the two escalated, the microphones of Koçyiğit and Çömez were turned off.
WHAT HAPPENED?
DEM Party Spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan stated in a press conference at the Party Headquarters on May 9, "It is a matter of time before the PKK announces that it has convened its congress. This is an important step. The aftermath of this step will also be significant." Shortly after Doğan's statement, the terrorist organization PKK announced that it had convened its congress on May 5-7. On May 12, the PKK announced that it had dissolved itself and laid down its arms.
