With the "e-Lawyer" system initiated by the Ministry of Justice, prisoners and detainees will be able to meet with their lawyers online from prison.
The Ministry of Justice is launching a new application to strengthen communication between prisoners and their lawyers.
With the application called "e-Lawyer," inmates and detainees in prison will now be able to communicate with their lawyers via video connection without the need for face-to-face meetings.
THERE IS A 30-MINUTE LIMIT
According to ministry officials, each meeting a prisoner has with their lawyer within the system will be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes and can be used no more than twice a week. This new regulation is expected to facilitate the meeting processes in prisons and allow for the faster management of existing legal procedures.
IT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN ALL PRISONS SOON
Justice Minister Gürlek stated in a post regarding the e-Lawyer application that they continue to develop the digital transformation process in justice services.
Expressing that one of the digital applications in the judiciary is the e-Lawyer application, Gürlek noted:
"We are launching our innovative e-Lawyer application. Inmates and detainees will be able to have video calls with their lawyers without the need for face-to-face meetings thanks to this additional opportunity provided. Meetings can be held a maximum of two times a week, with a total duration of 30 minutes. We continue to take steps to further increase accessibility in judicial services and facilitate our citizens' access to justice."
Gürlek emphasized that the digital transformation process is ongoing and stated that the "e-Lawyer" application will be activated in all prisons shortly.
WHAT IS THE E-LAWYER APPLICATION?
The e-Lawyer application was implemented by the Ministry of Justice to ensure the more effective use of the right to defense and to advance the digital transformation in justice services, thereby speeding up trial processes.
With the application, prisoners or detainees will be able to make video calls with their lawyers.
HOW WILL THE MEETING PROCESS BE CONDUCTED?
Meetings can be monitored by correctional institution officials but cannot be listened to.
A maximum of two call rights can be used, provided that the total duration is 30 minutes.
All meetings will take place on weekdays between 09:00 and 17:00.
The meeting can only be initiated by the prisoner or detainee.
Detainees and prisoners belonging to terrorist or organized crime groups, those sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, and those subject to Article 9/3 of Law No. 5275 will not be able to benefit from the e-Lawyer application.
